Cutting edge research into energy change in ACT Friday, 20 November 2015

The Energy Change Institute at the Australian National University (ANU) will open its doors to the wider community in early December to share its research projects.

The Energy Change Institute (ECI) covers a variety of research including energy science, engineering, economics, technologies, and social, legal and policy implications of these areas. Members and the public will be able to learn about all 18 groups of leading-edge research currently taking place.

Two new energy research ‘clusters’ will be presented on 7 December at the ECI’s Open Day on Energy and Security and Wind Energy. The university has developed a new Wind Energy masters course as part of the Master of Energy Change and Climate Change (in addition to Engineering).

At the Open Day, there will be further presentations discussing issues at the forefront of energy change research. Topics will include Global Governance and Artificial Photosynthesis, Decarbonising the ANU campus and a presentation by ECI Director Professor Ken Baldwin. Lab tours in the ECI’s research areas of nuclear, fusion, solar thermal, and solar photovoltaics will be also be offered on the day.

In the evening of the Open Day, Dr Pierre Verlinden, Chief Scientist of the world’s largest solar panel manufacturer Trina Solar, will present the annual ACT Government - ANU Solar Oration on changes in the energy landscape and the possibilities of an “all electrical” future.

Hydro Tasmania’s King Island Renewable Energy Integration Project has hit an energy security milestone this month. The project, developed from a collaborative research programme between Hydro Tasmania and the University of Tasmania, aims to displace the use of diesel fuel to supply energy needs, by using a combination of renewable and enabling technologies designed to meet the needs of remote communities.
