Engineers Australia’s Risk Engineering Society has prepared a new guideline on safety. The guideline provides a safety case approach that demonstrates due diligence consistent with the requirements of the new Work Health and Safety legislation now adopted by most Australian states. It uses the precautionary principle which is fundamentally different from the standard probability approach to risk. According to the Risk Engineering Society, engineers who continue to use the hazard-based approach do so at their peril.
