Expressions of interest open for WA freeway upgrades Tuesday, 15 August 2017

Infrastructure in the Perth region is about to get a boost with three major freeway upgrades, including a ‘Smart freeway’ project, with expressions of interest now open.

The Western Australia Government has made the announcements for the build of these major infrastructure projects, aimed at fixing congestions hotspots on Perth’s freeways. The projects are expected to provide more than 850 jobs.

The improvements to the Kwinana and Mitchell Freeways are part of the $2.3 billion package of road and rail projects the state government announced in May. Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said significant growth in traffic volumes over recent years has resulted in congestion and flow breakdown on the Kwinana Freeway while the Mitchell Freeway carries a significant volume of traffic each day.

The expressions of interest are for:

  • Kwinana Freeway – northbound widening from two to three lanes – Russell Road to Roe Highway (construction to start mid-2018 and completed mid-2019)
  • Kwinana Freeway – northbound Smart Freeway upgrade – Farrington Road to Narrows Bridge
  • Mitchell Freeway – southbound widening of one additional lane for 7 km) – Cedric Street to Vincent Street (construction to start mid-2018 and completed by end of 2019).

The two Kwinana Freeway upgrades, in Perth’s southern suburbs, will cover about 22 km from Russell Road in Success to the Narrows Bridge in South Perth. WA’s first Smart freeway on the Kwinana Freeway will have a lane added from the Canning Highway to the Narrows Bridge through Smart technology, with new ramp signals at Farrington Road, South Street, Leach Highway and Cranford Avenue to balance the flow of traffic onto the freeway. The technology is set to improve journey times on the Kwinana Freeway as far south as the Roe Highway.

The upgrades coincide with the WA Government’s Metronet strategy for Perth to connect key areas across the metropolitan area. More information is available at www.tenders.wa.gov.au
