Field robotics expert to present Warren Centre Innovation Lecture Monday, 09 November 2015

International expert in the research, development and commercialisation of field robotics system, Professor Salah Sukkarieh will present the Warren Centre Innovation Lecture on 17 November 2015.

The Warren Centre Innovation Lecture, to be held at the Westin Hotel in Sydney, will be opened by the Honourable Wyatt Roy, Assistant Minister for Innovation.

Salah’s presentation will focus on intelligent operations - how robotics and intelligent systems are coming together to transform industry.

Professor Sukkarieh is Professor of Robotics and Intelligent systems at the University of Sydney’s School of Aerospace Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering. He is also Director of Research and Innovation at the Australian Centre of Field Robotics, and in October was named a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.

Additionally, Professor Sukkarieh has led a number of robotics and intelligent systems R&D projects within the logistics, commercial aviation, aerospace, education, environment monitoring, agriculture and mining sectors. Bridging the gap between research and industry, he has been a consultant to players like Rio Tinto, BHP, Patrick Stevedores, Qantas, BAE Systems, QLD Biosecurity, Meat and Livestock Australia, and the NSW DPI.

In 2014 he was awarded the NSW Science and Engineering Award for Excellence in Engineering and Information and Communications Technologies.

Ashley Brinson, Executive Director of The Warren Centre for Advanced Engineering, says Professor Sukkarieh is a visionary in the application of automated systems.

“The work of the Australian Centre for Field Robotics has yielded billions of dollars of value and improved efficiency for organisations like Qantas and Rio Tinto.  These are shining examples of what is possible with effective industry-research collaboration,” said Brinson.

"I'm passionate about developing high-end technology and supporting its adoption, because it has significant and immediate improvement for industry and the wider community.  Technology truly has the power to transform our economy,” said Salah.

The Warren Centre Innovation Lecture was established in 1996 to raise awareness of Australia’s innovation success and promote inspirational role models to stimulate engagement opportunities.

Over the years, it has showcased some of Australia’s great thinkers from John Bertrand’s insights in delivering a successful America’s Cup campaign to Catherine Livingstone’s vision to drive world leading technology at Cochlear to Lars Rassmussen’s incredible development of Google Maps.

The Warren Centre brings industry, government and academia together to bring thought leadership in engineering, technology, and innovation. It provides independent advice on technology and innovation to government and to industry, while advocating for the importance of science, technology and innovation.
