GM Holden Manufacturing Plant Site Tour Wednesday, 10 August 2016

On the 28 June 2016, 25 Engineers participated in a tour of the GM Holden Manufacturing facility at Elizabeth in South Australia. The tour was conducted in the Body Shop and the General Assembly Plants and focused on the engineering projects that have been successfully completed over the years to enable the current range of vehicles to be manufactured to the highest level of engineering, quality and customer satisfaction.

The tour duration was 3 hours and was conducted as a ‘cooks tour’ that show cased many of the significant engineering achievements.  The tour followed the build path of the car and we saw how a body shell was created from metal panels, skins and closures.  The painted body then entered General Assembly and the vehicle progressed its way through the 4 trim lines, 3 chassis lines and 2 final lines before the wheels touched down.

The participants were actively involved with the tour asking many questions about the complex manufacturing systems that they were seeing.  The tour concluded with an extensive Q and A session by the participants to cement their understanding of the intricate details of the engineering solutions they had just seen that are required to build a modern day motor vehicle.
