How do competitive strategies from consulting engineers firms impact pricing? Friday, 15 September 2017

Engineers work across a wide variety of firms competing with each other for different clients and their projects. Based on the market conditions, the consulting engineering firms establish business strategies that lead to different pricing strategies. In essence, firms offer different prices to our clients, which can be attributed to supply and demand pressures.

The various practices of any company operating in the marketplace can be described using a theoretical framework. These frameworks are usually describing a microeconomic business-to-customer relationship. However, consulting engineering firms operate in a business-to-business environment. The question arises whether or not the prevailing economic theories hold for the business-to-business relationships that are exercised by the consulting engineering companies. The services provided by the consulting engineering company are different from those provided by business-to-customer services such as airlines.

At UTS, PhD student Daren Maynard is investigating how the competitive strategies of the consulting engineering firms impact on the pricing strategies of the firms themselves. This research seeks to explain the economic behaviour of the consulting engineering industry in the New South Wales from a theoretical framework. The research will provide an empirically determined framework to explain the industry and not just from anecdotal evidence. It can explain how competitive strategy of the consulting engineering company influences the pricing strategy because of the client, sector, and engineering speciality involved.

In order to achieve this research goal, the research team invite participants to take part in the research survey. The respondents should be working in a consulting engineering company, and is involved in the development and execution of the competitive strategy of the consulting engineering services.

In addition, the research team are interested in interviewing persons, who are involved in the development and execution of the competitive strategy of the consulting engineering services. These confidential interviews provide further insight into the competitive strategies and the business environment to aid the findings of the research.
