Caterpillar Underground Mining (UGM) is undergoing revolutionary change as it transitions from a product manufacturer of heavy mining equipment to a high velocity, rapid, customer-focused innovative design facility.

In recent times, the manufacture of underground Load Haul Dump (LHD) machines and Underground Articulated Trucks (UATs) has ceased at Caterpillar UGM’s Burnie facility on Tasmania’s North-West Coast.

Caterpillar UGM Engineering Manager, Robert Miller said the team is focused on delivering the next generation of superior performance in underground hard rock mining.

“We are extremely fortunate to have over 500 cumulative years of underground mining experience in Burnie,” Mr Miller said.

"Furthermore, we also have deep expertise in semi-autonomous and autonomous mining as well as active involvement in the latest digital innovations and machine design approaches at Caterpillar.

"Our team is extremely excited about the next chapter of our business in which we will be delivering significant updates in safety and productivity that will help each one of customers go home more safely and more profitably each day and every day.

“The demand for innovation is being driven by our customers. Mining customers are now, more than ever, seeking improved low-cost machines and technologies.

"They no longer want just mining machines, as they are expecting highly reliable, innovative technologies to minimise costs and maximize productivity while also having the capability to integrate into our new digital world.”

The latest product developments from Caterpillar UGM will be showcased at MINExpo in Las Vegas, NV USA from 26 – 28 September 2016, including innovations in emission reductions, autonomous systems, and machine design productivity improvements.

The Burnie facility will be the focus of an upcoming Engineers Australia Continuing Professional Development (CPD) site tour, showcasing the design centre and the advanced manufacturing capabilities of the region.

While providing a space for the local engineering industry to network, Caterpillar UGM hopes to engage the wider community to understand how the digital revolution and customer demands are driving massive change in the underground mining industry.
