Newcastle Division General Manager’s Update – September 2015 Wednesday, 09 September 2015

Some say to survive it you need to be “as mad as a hatter” and this could be very true of the Newcastle Division’s Young Engineers 2015 Formal Dinner on this Friday 18 September at the beautiful Bella Vista in Mayfield.

Some say you’d be “mad” not to get your tickets NOW – a limited number of tickets remain so don’t be the “mad hatter” who misses out!

For those that don’t know the phrase "as mad as a hatter" refers to the 19th century usage of a mercury-based compound in the making of fine hats. Due to long-term exposure, hatters would often develop symptoms of mercury poisoning, such as tremors or mood-swings, that would make them appear "mad" to others.

Don’t forget to mark out your diary for the upcoming Risk Seminar: Real World Risk Management on Tuesday 20 October at Club Macquarie. Speakers include Pedram DanshMand, Topic: Real World Techniques of Risk Management, Peter Kohler, Topic: Real World Assets & Infrastructure Risk Management, Ed Lewis, Topic: Risk Culture, Engineering risk and decisions and John Hardwick, Topic: Real World approach to defensible Risk Management. Visit the website and register early as this workshop will fill quickly.

Australian Engineering Week was a huge success for the Division with over 350 students across a number of locations attending Discover Engineering presentations. Thanks again to all our regional volunteers that helped get these events off the ground in Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Grafton, Ballina and to those who helped out with the Newcastle event. Our Central Coasts group hosted the Central Coast Engineering Games which saw over 150 students from 9 schools compete in the Straw Tower competition. The winning teams were Awesome Friends and The Straw workers from Umina. The third prize winner went to the Kulnura Kids from Kulnura Primary school with the encouragement award going to The Straw Warriors also from Umina. A big thank you to the Central Coast team Angela, Richard, Chris, Darryl and Blake who made it all come together smoothly.

Peter FitzSimons entertained just on 100 guests at the Sally Chapman Memorial Dinner, held at Fort Scratchley commemorating WWI. Once again, a huge congratulations to our 2015 Young Professional Engineer and 2015 Professional Engineer of the Year, Tim Walton and Neil Petherbridge!

Thanks again to our sponsors Aurecon & GHD for their continued support.
