NT recipients of $10k scholarship program congratulated Thursday, 25 May 2017

Engineers Australia and the NT’s largest electricity producer, government-owned corporation Territory Generation, congratulate the two recipients of new Engineering Diversity Scholarships, worth $5k each.

The Indigenous Engineering Diversity Scholarship and the Female Engineering Diversity Scholarship winners were recently selected, both of who are undergraduate Charles Darwin University (CDU) engineering students.

Engineers Australia, Northern Division, General Manager Mark Monaghan said that the quality of scholarships applicants was high, reflecting a bright future for engineering diversity in the Northern Territory.

“The Territory should be proud that all nominations received were of an extremely high calibre,” Mr Monaghan said.

“They showed an attitude of excellence and strong leadership qualities and the successful recipients highlighted admirable motivations for their pursuit of an engineering career.

“Every Territorian should have the opportunity to engineer our Northern future, and it is vital that those engaged in this noble activity reflect the diversity of our community.

“These scholarships go part of the way to building and supporting the pipeline of diversity needed in our engineering students at CDU.”

The recipient of the Female Engineering Diversity Scholarship Shannon Fuller said that the scholarship will help support her as a woman pursuing a career in civil and structural engineering.

“It is a recognition of the call for more women to join the industry, which was of course a factor in my own decision to apply for engineering,” Ms Fuller said.

“It will reduce the financial pressures of full-time study, as it will assist with the costs directly associated with studying, and I may also set some funds aside for any unexpected costs which may arise later.”

Territory Generation Chief Executive Officer Tim Duignan said that the organisation is looking forward to working with the two scholarship recipients in work placements.

“Territory Generation thanks all candidates who applied for the scholarship program, and congratulates the successful candidates on their winning applications,” Mr Duignan said.

“Territory Generation welcomes the successful candidates to undertake work placements during 2017’s semester breaks, which will assist in providing the candidates with engineering work experience to complement their university studies.

“Encouraging diversity in the engineering sector aligns with Territory Generation’s corporate values and fits our strategic direction, which is the fundamental reason for partnering with Engineers Australia.”

The scholarship panel considered a number of criteria while making their selection, including their personal motivations for pursuing engineering, ATAR and academic transcript results, and character.

Mr Duignan said the program will cultivate diversity in the NT’s engineering industry into the future.

“The long-term benefit of the scholarship program creates opportunities for females and Indigenous students, which fosters diversity in the engineering sector in the Northern Territory,” he said.

“Territory Generation is actively working to better reflect the demographics of the communities in which it operates, and supports the engineering field in the Northern Territory as a whole.”

Engineers Australia and Territory Generation will formally congratulate Shannon Fuller and the other scholarship recipient, a Jawoyn woman who wishes to remain anonymous, at a presentation event, along with the Minister for Education The Hon Eva Lawler MLA and the Minister for Essential Services, Minister for Housing and Community Development and Minister for Public Employment The Hon Gerald McCarthy MLA.

The presentation event will be held at the Darwin Engineers Australia office on Thursday 1 June 2017 between 5pm and 6pm.
