Guillermo (Bill) Capati, PSM FIEAust CPEng NER APEC Engineer IntPE(Aus) RPEQ, graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering (1973) and Sanitary Engineering (1974) from Mapúa University, Philippines.
Bill has over 40 years of professional experience and has worked in the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Australia. He has been an Adjunct Professor at the Advanced Water Management Centre, University of Queensland since 2008 and has worked at the City of Gold Coast for the past 23 years, where he managed the planning of the City’s sustainable water future.
Guillermo was recently recognised by Engineers Australia as the 2017 Professional Engineer of the Year for the Queensland Division.
Hi Guillermo! What is your current job title and function?
Project Manager at Gold Coast Water and Waste currently working on the Drought Readiness Plan for the City.
Why did you pursue a career in engineering?
I was fascinated with bridges when I was a young boy, so I wanted to build one when I grew up.
What is the most challenging or interesting project you’ve ever worked on?
Managing the City of Gold Coast’s worst drought on record between 2002 and 2006.
What does winning the 2017 Professional Engineer of the Year Award mean to you?
I am truly honoured by this award because it is given by my peers in the engineering profession.

Engineers Australia is a well-respected professional association which provides a good framework for the continuous development of engineering professionals and a voice in the wider community.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you like to have with you?
Canteen, knife and flint.
What do you see as one of the biggest issues facing the engineering profession?
Addressing climate change and ensuring energy security and affordability.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Spending time with family and friends.
Who is your hero?
My Dad, who was a rural doctor. He was an excellent role model who stayed true to his profession until his retirement.

My family’s sense of humour.
