Maaz Syed MIEAust CPEng NER is working as a Manager of Production Organization (Part21G approval granted by European Aviation Safety Agency) off Etihad Airways. He recently started in this role and prior to this, he has been working as a lead design engineer at Etihad Airways, based in Abu Dhabi, who recently attained Chartered status. Maaz has a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering from Middle East Technical University in Turkey, a Master of Information Technology from Griffith University, a Master of Engineering (Simulation Technology) from Griffith University, and a Master of Business Administration from James Cook University. 

What is your current job title and function?

I am Manager of Part 21G organization at Etihad Airways and am based in Abu Dhabi. I oversee a team of production planners and officers responsible for production of aircraft parts in accordance with approved design. I am also responsible for the introduction of new production technologies within Part 21G organization of Etihad Airways.

Why did you pursue engineering as a career?

When I was 10 years old, I flew on a 747 and sat next to the wing. I was fascinated by the movement of the aileron and flaps, and from then on I wanted to be an aeronautical engineer.

What are you working on now?

I am currently working on the qualification and certification of pioneering 3D printed aircraft interior parts.

Why did you choose to become Chartered?

Chartered status is like a quality trademark that makes you more employable and demonstrates your proficiency as an engineer.

What is your favourite TV show?

My favourite television show is Aircraft Investigation. My seven-year-old daughter is also really into it.

What is the most recent present you bought yourself?

A remote controlled drone, which I fly with my daughter to help encourage her interest in engineering and start asking questions about how things work.

What is your favourite movie?

Heat and Forrest Gump.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you like to have with you?

I live in Abu Dhabi, so I already live on a desert island. If I was stuck on a desert island by myself, I would like a satellite phone, Steve Jobs’ autobiography and an air-conditioner.

If you could take a year off to study anything, what would it be?

A PhD in sustainability.

What is the most recent book you read?

A technical book about 3D printing.

If you could have dinner with anyone, past or present, who would it be?

My parents, who live in New Delhi, because they are the people who shaped me and have always given me time.

What words best describe you?

Passionate and a perfectionist.

What is the greatest piece of technology released in the last decade?

The smart phone.

Who is your hero?

Steve Jobs because the smart phone was his concept and he has revolutionised the way we communicate today.

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpower to be?

The ability to create peace and take away weapons.

How do you achieve work/life balance?

By prioritising and planning.
