La Trobe University, in collaboration with local schools and international partners, is implementing initiatives to develop the engineers of the future.

Kolbe Catholic College and La Trobe have joined forces to encourage young women to engage with engineering. La Trobe has sponsored two of Kolbe’s top girls to compete in the FIRST Australia National Robotics Competition. The institutions are also running a mentoring program, pairing girls at Kolbe Catholic College with young women studying engineering at La Trobe. This year La Trobe will also launch a series of ‘Women in Engineering’ workshops to further encourage girls to re-imagine their futures as Engineers.

LifeJourney International is also working with La Trobe to connect science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) students with mentors and employers. Through the LifeJourney platform students will be able to navigate their path to a rewarding career, drawing on the experience of STEM experts from industry and the University. La Trobe and LifeJourney will be featuring this innovative new platform and discussing the future of STEM at the upcoming VCE and Careers Expo in Melbourne.

Of course, growing Australia’s STEM capability also means ensuring promising students have access to future-focused, industry-led educational opportunities after year 12. La Trobe’s newly launched Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) offers the next step. Recognising the increasing need for Engineers who have the flexibility to develop creative solutions to complex technical problems, La Trobe has crafted a multidisciplinary approach to engineering education. La Trobe engineering students will develop expertise across mechanical, civil and electrical engineering. As graduates, they will have technical capabilities that span traditional engineering boundaries so they can adapt to each new challenge they face. La Trobe will also continue to offer a Civil Engineering program.

While the Turnbull Government has set the tone for the future of STEM in Australia with the launch of the National Innovation and Science Agenda, La Trobe University and its partners are actively working to ensure that the students of today become the Engineers of tomorrow. With La Trobe’s innovative approach to engineering education, these Engineers will be prepared to lead the ideas boom into the next decade and beyond.
