Understanding the engineering skills needs of the future Wednesday, 06 April 2016

The Tasmanian workforce is getting older and there will soon be a crisis point whereby the large cohort of retirees will not be replaced by a pipeline of professionals.

To address this issue, Engineers Australia is preparing a workforce development strategy for the profession in Tasmania, a project supported by Skills Tasmania.

The purpose of this strategy is to ensure that Tasmania’s businesses, students, and educators, are prepared for changing technology, education needs and fluctuations in demand in engineering activity in Tasmania.

It will help identify strategies to address the skills needs of the ageing workforce in the context of sustained demand and increasing technological and compliance requirements.

Key outcomes of the strategy include:

  • A better understanding of the demographics of the current industry in Tasmania, the value of the sector to state growth and establishment of  strong and reliable data set to underpin future workforce analysis.
  • Increased engagement of industry with the education system; particularly to demonstrate the value of the system in supporting workforce development and addressing workforce skills ‘problems’.
  • Enhanced collaboration between industry and training/education in the delivery of industry demanded training.
  • Better articulation of pathways and career opportunities to the potential engineering workforce.
  • Documented strategies and action plans to increase workforce development and planning activity in the engineering industry in Tasmania.

Contribute to the Strategy

Members, engineering managers and employers are encouraged to contribute to the strategy by completing an online survey by Friday 29 April, 2016.

Face-to-face consultation sessions will also be hosted in Burnie, Hobart, and Launceston as a part of developing this strategy.
