UWA student’s once in a lifetime CEO opportunity Thursday, 30 June 2016

Beating 852 other candidates, University of Western Australia (UWA) chemical engineering student, Mia Savic StudIEAust (22) is being given the valuable opportunity by Adecco Group Australia to be ‘CEO for One Month’ and be mentored by Country Manager and CEO, Ger Doyle.

Through Miss Savic’s involvement in the Women in Oil and Gas (WIOG) group as the UWA President and her passion to benefit the broader community in her future engineering career, Miss Savic has demonstrated her ability to embrace the challenge of the ‘CEO for One Month’ program.

Speaking about what she hopes to achieve through this program, Miss Savic is keen to “see how business structures are integrated, how major decisions are made and the implications these decisions have on society. Additionally, as UWA President of WIOG, it would be a great opportunity for me to obtain an insight into the lack of diversity we face across various industries and how to provide a more effective solution to this issue.”

Commenting on her leadership experience to date Miss Savic shared, “I believe I have the five essential ingredients that make a good leader and build the right culture ‒ the three P’s (Proactive, Passion, and Positivity), as well as having good judgement and getting things done the first time. I hope to bring these out during the program.”

Miss Savic has not achieved this opportunity through chance. Adopting a proactive approach, Mia attended various career fairs and networking events throughout her studies and contributed to the industry through her WIOG involvement, which have led her to this point.

“It definitely did take some time out of my spare time, but it is important to realise that this is a gate to your future career. Additionally, I participated in the Career Mentor Link program provided by UWA. My mentor encouraged me to explore all possibilities in my degree and guided me in the right direction to find relevant answers as to what I wanted to do,” said Miss Savic.

When asked what she would recommend to an inexperienced candidate looking for a job, Miss Savic’s top tips are to be proactive, positive and adaptable.

“Apply for as many jobs as you can with a positive outlook. It is definitely not as easy as it sounds, but put it this way: every success and failure you experience along this journey will only lead to the career you dream of having. In saying this, keep your chin up as you never know what incredible opportunities come your way,” Miss Savic shared.

Looking to the future and based on her studies to date Miss Savic hopes to focus on “developing an understanding of the nature of the oil and gas industry, and what aspects could be improved upon. Given process engineering decisions are best placed to determine overall project valuation, I hope to merge these two skill sets, engineering and finance, for the benefit of oil and gas business and its stakeholders.”

The next step for Miss Savic after her inspiring Australian ‘CEO for One Month’ program is to be selected in the Top 10 Global Candidates to attend a boot camp in September 2016. From this, the Adecco Group ‘Global CEO for One Month’ will be chosen in October.
