WorleyParsons skilled volunteering efforts assist local Philippines community Tuesday, 08 September 2015

WorleyParsons and Australian Red Cross, have partnered to provide integrated skills to communities in need across some of the world’s most disaster-prone regions in Asia.

The partnership is the first of its kind to support Australian Red Cross international volunteers, providing innovative support across the region.

As an Australian Red Cross Community Partner for its disaster preparedness and recovery efforts, WorleyParsons is providing both in-country and remote skilled volunteering opportunities on a waste management project in the Philippines; with the project scheduled for completion at the end of the [September 2015] month.

This collaboration with Australian Red Cross demonstrates WorleyParsons commitment to the communities in which they work, as well as supporting the passion of WorleyParsons’ people to volunteer their technical skills. It also showcases WorleyParsons’ global reach of knowledge and leading commitment to providing ‘pro bono’ services to communities in need.

Senior Project Manager Chris Walsh and Procurement Buyer Patrick Dale have been serving as in-country volunteers. They are based in a small town called Lamut, in the northern Province of Ifugao. Speaking of his experience, Chris shared, “I came here knowing what the project needed. The one thing missing was the local [Project Management] expertise in Lamut, to support the development of the project. The most pleasant aspect of the work has been experiencing the huge involvement and knowledge of the managers and technicians in Lamut who helped to achieve the project aims.”

“The WorleyParsons partnership has been great for Australian Red Cross. WorleyParsons has supported two of their engineers to work on a waste management project in northern Philippines. Collecting and managing waste is very difficult due to the remote location and a lack of infrastructure there. The expertise and extra support WorleyParsons has provided has really helped the project progress and they’ve helped our partners in the Philippines find solutions to this difficult problem,” Catherine Harris from International Volunteer Partner, Australian Red Cross.

“This collaboration provides an innovative opportunity to WorleyParsons employees to utilise their skills for humanitarian projects and to make a long-lasting impact to disadvantaged communities worldwide,” WorleyParsons Corporate Responsibility Manager, Anu Menon.

Off the back of the success of this pilot project, WorleyParsons and Australian Red Cross are in discussions on delivering further aid projects in the region.
