Engineers Australia supports the commitment to improving level crossing safety, by improving illumination and visibility of trains, and calls for the code to be mandatory and implemented as soon as possible.  

The task of decarbonising the transport sector is urgent and Engineers Australia commends the government for focussing on this important element of the energy transition. In this submission we call for measures to address the upfront costs of EVs and the availability of charging infrastructure, among other factors.

Engineers Australia strongly believes that infrastructure is the essential enabler of productivity growth and it is essential to preserve and improve our standards of living. It should be fit for purpose and the flow of these services should stay ahead of population and economic growth.

Engineers Australia believes transport planning should be closely integrated with land use planning otherwise governments will be constantly in remedial mode, and there should be better separation between transport within population nodes (or centres) and between population centres.

Engineers Australia has examined the REF for the Proposed Newcastle Light Rail (NLR) and has concluded that the Proposal does not satisfy the key transport and urban design objectives for which it has been planned (the NTUPP), that it fails to deliver an integrated transport system and that alternatives are available which can meet these objectives and this integration.

We believe that the purpose of infrastructure is to establish the basis for higher quality, sustainable and productive lives for all Australian. To fulfil this challenge infrastructure it must become more sustainable.
