Introducing your 2017 President Thursday, 19 January 2017

David Sparkes FIEAust CPEng NER will lead the Newcastle engineering community as President of the region for Engineers Australia in 2017.

What is your current role and function?

I am a Principal Structural Engineer and the Newcastle office Market Leader for Property and Buildings (P/B) at GHD. This involves leading the P/B local strategy, as well as the hands-on management of engineering projects and mentoring staff.

Why did you pursue a career in engineering?

I started my career as a structural draftsperson at the age of 17. I was inspired by my first boss in this role and the engineering work involved to further my study in engineering.

I have been fortunate to work on many great projects, in many great teams, assisting clients and the community during my career. I take great satisfaction from my involvement with Engineers Australia and promoting the importance of engineers in our society.

What are you working on now?

The transformation of the Newcastle CBD means it’s an exciting time to work in P/B. I am involved in the engineering design of buildings and structures for many projects across the city and the Hunter Valley.

What has been a standout project you have worked on?

In recent times, the development of the University of Newcastle student accommodation stands out as an interesting project.

The project consisted of four, eight storey buildings with a loadbearing precast concrete façade. Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) initiatives for passive ventilation of the buildings were required to be integrated into the structural elements, resulting in many design and construction challenges. I was part of the team that provided all engineering services for this project.

What do you see as one of the biggest issues facing the engineering profession?

The engineering profession plays a key role in ensuring society adapts to the changing world – both the physical and digital. One of the biggest issues we face is ensuring we have appropriately educated persons prepared for these challenges. We need to focus on not only science and maths, but good, inspiring education across these fields so tomorrow’s engineers have the skills required.

How would you describe yourself in three words?

Honest, passionate, focused.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Looking after our small acreage in Maitland with my wife Kaylee, daughter Morgan and son Ethan. Spending hours in the garden is very relaxing and there is always something to do.

If the whole world was listening, what would you say?

Our natural resources on this planet are finite. We need to embrace a sustainable and energy efficient way of life and sharpen our focus on this immediately.

What inspires you?

Seeing young people take on challenges and new initiatives and grow. I work with some fantastic young people and helping them grow in their careers is very satisfying. This of course includes my own two children.
