Largest ever project financing of a land-based mine wins big Wednesday, 21 September 2016

The Roy Hill Project, a joint entry by Roy Hill Holdings and WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff, took out three major awards at the Australian Engineering Excellence Awards (AEEA) Western Australia 2016 presentation event.

Winning the AEEA Western Australia Awards for Project Management, Resource Development and the prestigious WA Engineering Distinction Award, the $10 billion Roy Hill Project shone on the night.

The Project—which involved the construction of an iron ore mine, a processing plant, a 344 km heavy haul railway line, a two berth port, enabling infrastructure in the Pilbara and a state-of-the-art Remote Operations Centre in Perth—impressed Western Australia Chief Judge, Dr Ken Michael AC HonFIEAust EngExec.

“Delivering a project of this magnitude Roy Hill Holdings adopted an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contracting model, finishing on time and on budget, with a reduction in the environmental risk,” said Dr Michael.

“The number of engineering firsts achieved throughout the project are outstanding. A new average rail laying rate of 1.3 km per day is a breakthrough for the industry. As well, a unique Occupational Health and Safety system was developed and introduced that allowed the project to achieve statistical results far below industry averages,” Dr Michael went on to say.

“In particular, Roy Hill established a strong relationship with the Native Title Claimant Groups in the Pilbara and made commitments that offer enduring benefits.”

“This year’s winner demonstrated world best practice and established new benchmarks for the delivery of major resource development projects, benefiting the industry for years to come.”

Congratulations to all AEEA Western Australia Awards 2016 winners and the Individual Award Winner.
