Australian frigate build steers towards strong shipbuilding future Monday, 31 August 2015

News the Government plans to invest in a long term, Australian-based frigate construction project is welcomed by peak engineering body Engineers Australia.

“The Prime Minister’s announcement of $20 billion to build a fleet of frigates in Australia is good news not only for naval engineers and those working in the ship building industry, but for supporting industries as well,” said Mr Greg Walters, National Vice President Engineers Australia and former President of the Australian Society for Defence Engineering.

“It is pleasing to see a long-term vision for Australian ship building, with the Government expecting 20 years work for the frigate project commencing in 2020. Housing the majority of the frigate project in South Australia will go some way to helping the State’s economy recover and reinforce Adelaide as Australia’s ship-building hub.

“Going forward, it is critical the government manages this investment wisely and engages with engineers from design through to completion of the project.

“Input from highly experienced Australian engineers will reduce overall project risk, driving innovation and improving the financial and project outcomes for the program; especially given these frigates will include highly complex surveillance and defence platforms to be maintained by the engineering team.

“Engineers are a crucial component of Australia’s strong shipbuilding future and in ensuring our Defence Forces have the capability they need to serve and protect the nation well into the future,” said Mr Walters.
