Refractory installation services for Ichthys LNG onshore awarded Wednesday, 07 October 2015

The UGL Kentz Joint Venture has awarded the refractory installation services contract for the Ichthys LNG onshore facilities to WA-based Civmec.

Under the terms of the contact, Civmec will send a project team to Bladin Point, Darwin to provide the refractory installation services. The scope of work includes installing high-alumina refractory bricks and monolithic, and thermal dryout.

The Ichthys gas and condensate field was discovered by INPEX in 2000, located offshore in the Browse Basin, in the Timor Sea. The reserve volume of the Ichthys Field is estimated to be 12.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 527 million barrels of condensate.

The onshore LNG plant at Bladin Point will cool gas from the Ichthys field, transforming it into liquid for transport to Darwin via an 889 km gas export pipeline.

The $34 billion Ichthys project is the largest oil and gas development in the Northern Territory with the first production expected to commence in 2016. It is a joint venture between INPEX group companies, major partner TOTAL and the Australian subsidiaries of Tokyo Gas, Osaka Gas, Chubu Electric Power and Toho Gas. It is expected to produce 8.4 million tonnes of LNG and 1.6 million tonnes of LPG per annum, along with approximately 100,000 barrels of condensate per day at peak.

JKC Australian LNG, a joint venture between JGC Corporation, KBR and Chiyoda Corporation, is responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction of the onshore facilities, including the gas processing plant at Blaydin Point.

The total onshore facilities will include two LNG processing trains, LPG and condensate plants, product storage tanks, a combined cycle power plant, administration facilities, utilities and a product load out jetty.

In 2014, the JKC Australian LNG Joint Venture awarded the UGL Kentz Joint Venture the US$640 million contract for the structural, mechanical and piping (SMP) construction package for the Ichthys Project’s Onshore LNG facilities. The scope of work includes site-wide installation of process trains, as well as pre-commissioning and commissioning.

Civmec says that in addition to winning the contract for the Ichthys project, it has also won a contracty to carry out refractory installation work on the Chevron-operated Gorgon LNG Project on Barrow Island, where it will supply specialist services to ensure refractory installation works that conform to stringent international standards.

Civmec recently established a new division offering refractory maintenance services.

Patrick Tallon, Chief Executive Officer of Civmec, said, “At Civmec we…see these awards to our new refractory division as strategically important. They affirm the rising demand for our highly specialised services and reflect companies' confidence in our ability to meet stringent standards.”
