Structural College

Structural engineering is a creative profession that makes a significant contribution to industrial, residential and recreational infrastructure.

Structural engineering is also very important because it ensures buildings are strong enough to withstand natural forces and the loads imposed on them by use. Structural engineering produces buildings, bridges, in-ground structures, footings, frameworks and space frames made of any type of material.

Structural engineers are involved in projects from the research and design phase right through to construction. They also work with other professionals including architects, builders and other engineering disciplines to ensure new structures are safe and environmentally friendly.

The Structural College was originally formed in 1995 and now has over 7000 members including members in rural and remote Australia. Our members work in diverse industries including design, planning, construction, inspection and rehabilitation. Structural College members are held in high esteem and are often asked for expert commentary or opinions on structural engineering issues.

Some of our key activities are to:

  • Publish the Australian Journal of Structural Engineering.
  • Admit new members and audit continuing members.
  • Nominate members to technical standards committees.
  • Co-ordinate the annual Australasian Structural Engineering Conference.
  • Deliver a program of continuing professional development (CPD) for structural engineers.
  • Facilitate technical conferences, meetings, events and awards.
  • Publish learned papers and other resources.
