Society for Building Services Engineers

For engineers committed to construction and building disciplines.

About the Society for Building Services Engineers (SBSE)

The aims of the society are to guide and foster the acquisition and exchange of knowledge in all matters pertaining to engineering and services relating to buildings, and in particular:

  • To act as a learned society embracing all aspects of engineering theory and practice, relevant to the application of building engineering services in Australia.
  • To promote the wider application of sustainable and energy efficient buildings in the interests of Australian economic development.
  • To inform its members of local and overseas activities of scientific and engineering significance in the field of building engineering services.
  • To provide opportunities for intellectual and fraternal exchange for Society members with a common interest in the development of building engineering services and associated technologies.
  • To liaise with other scientific and engineering bodies with similar aims, and in particular to represent Australia on international organisations, such as the Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air conditioning and Heating (AIRAH), American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) - USA, the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) - UK.

The Society may be involved in any issue which affects Building Services engineering, including;

  • The implications of compliance with the Building Code of Australia.
  • Building Services Engineering policy, planning, design, construction, maintenance and sustainability.
  • Holding a number of formal meetings and site visits each year, addressing matters relating to building services engineering and associated technologies and covering the broadest possible range of interests.
  • Organising technical conferences with the widest possible participation in support of building engineering services and related technologies; the conference may be organised in conjunction with other organisations.
  • Circulating a publication or newsletter of the Society, which will include news and technical articles, which may be of interest and value to the members.
  • Establishing branches of the Society in all States.
  • Arranging and conducting social functions and appropriate activities which are conducive to the above aims.

Why you should be involved

The participation of technologists, and engineers in the Society's' activities is actively encouraged. Participation will facilitate your and the profession's development by:

  • expanding the range of contacts of participants
  • improving the participants knowledge and skills
  • becoming a unified voice for the industry on matters of common interest.

Society Meetings

SBSE Chapters meet regularly in the Division offices of Engineers Australia. There are chapters in WA, NSW and the ACT. Technical meetings are held monthly or bi-monthly. Technical meeting notices will be circulated in the Engineers Australia Division newsletters.

The technical meetings are also advertised for each Division (click on the links at the top of the page for your Division).

Activities

The Society represents the diverse range of issues in building services. The activities are managed by a committee drawn from a range of interests in the industry.

The activities of the Society throughout the year includes both specific disciplines and cross industry matters. The monthly meetings are a combination of technical papers and site visits. The Society co-operates with other organisations in the field and with other Engineers Australia Technical Societies.

There are opportunities to network with other organisations such as ASHRAE, AIRAH, CIBSE and kindred organisations whose technical sessions may be relevant from time to time.
