Reinforcing steels with a yield strength of 600 MPa

6.00 pm — 7.30 pm AEST, 28 May 2024
Engineers Australia Sydney Office Mezzanine Floor 44 Market Street , Sydney New South Wales, 2000
Online and in-person (Sydney)

Overview

Changes in 2018 to AS 3600 - Concrete Structures and in 2019 to AS/NZS 4671 - Steel for the reinforcement of concrete and now a 2024 Amendment No 2 to AS 5100.5 Bridge design, Part 5: Concrete provide the reinforced concrete industry the opportunity to explore the benefits offered by higher strength, ductile reinforcing steels. These changes and amendment mean the design models in AS 3600: 2018 and in AS 5100.5 now apply for 600 MPa steels in reinforced concrete elements. In response to these changes, 600 MPa reinforcing steels are now being produced and marketed in Australia, in unique diameters designed to reduce the steel content in reinforced concrete structures and hence its embodied carbon. This innovative development can lead to more sustainable structures with the potential to reduce safety risk and costs of a concrete structure. The presentation will examine aspects of 600 MPa reinforcing steels which will assist engineers to incorporate 600 MPa steels into reinforced concrete designs.

Learning outcomes

Attendees will gain insights into 600 MPa reinforcing steel in relation to:

  • Bar sizes available, including its mechanical and chemical properties.
  • Compliance with Australian Standards and Codes.
  • CodeMarks for specific applications which facilitate design.
  • A Case Study demonstrating how the benefits of lower mass and embodied carbon are achieved.
