Thought Leader Series: Assistive intelligence, a practical approach to AI

1.00 pm — 2.30 pm AEST, 23 May 2024
Webinar

Overview

The excitement around generative technology has led to a common misconception that GPTs equate to AI. For engineers, AI has numerous broader and more immediate applications that can assist and augment their work.

Predictive Analytics & Maintenance, Computer Vision & Image Recognition and Intelligent Decision Support Systems are just some of the current real-world applications we’ll explore in this webinar with Josh Kanner, Senior Director of Product & Strategy Analytics & AI, for Oracle Construction & Engineering.

As with any new technology it’s important to consider how a particular solution fits into your overall system and what you hope to achieve by its implementation.

Josh will be joined by (KPMG OR OTHER) who will go on to explain how they partner with organisations to map and understand critical data connections as part of solution design as a critical first step. It’s also crucially important to maintain the security of your data when using these tools.

Ai represents an enormous opportunity; together Josh and guests will then explain how education is the key to separating the hype from what is practical and available now.

In addition, they’ll posit it’s not essential for professionals to learn specialist code, but it is important to understand the various applications and where they fit into their overall process. They will provide links to websites and resources that specialise in AI news and trends for engineering professionals. For example:

  1. IEEE Spectrum AI (https://spectrum.ieee.org/artificial-intelligence)
  2. AI Trends (https://www.aitrends.com/)
  3. Engineering.com AI & Machine Learning (https://www.engineering.com/AI-ML.aspx)
  4. Towards Data Science (https://towardsdatascience.com/)
  5. KDnuggets (https://www.kdnuggets.com/)
  6. Analytics Insight (https://www.analyticsinsight.net/)

As always this will be a webinar that focuses on practical steps professionals can take to understand this emerging technology and how they can harness it assist them in their work.

Key messages-

  • Ai is like any other technology before, in that there is a hype and fear cycle then reality sets in. We prefer to call it Assistive Intelligence, or Augmented intelligence.
  • Being proactive about your own Education is the best strategy but doesn’t necessarily mean you need to learn specialist code. We provide some resource links.
  • Predictive Analytics & Maintenance, Computer Vision & Image Recognition and Intelligent Decision Support Systems are other AI based technologies that have practical benefits for our industry right now.
  •  Like any technology, understanding what it does, the outcomes you want from it and where it best fits into your current system and process, as well as security of your data is a critical first step.

Who should attend

This webinar is highly relevant for anyone working in the organisations responsible for public infrastructure including transport, energy, waste, water, telecommunications, social infrastructure etc.

You do not need to be an Engineers Australia member to attend.

Josh Kanner
Senior Director of Product & Strategy, ORACLE Construction & Engineering | Analytics & AI

Josh is responsible for the AI and Analytics strategy for Oracle’s Construction and Engineering Global business unit, which he joined in November of 2022 upon its acquisition of Newmetrix, the AI-powered safety risk analytics software provider where he was founder & CEO. Newmetrix applies computer vision and predictive analytics models to identify indicators of risk and predict which 20% of projects will have 80% of the safety risk in the coming week. Prior to Newmetrix he was co-founder of Vela Systems, a pioneer in the use of web and tablet workflows for construction and capital projects. Vela Systems grew from bootstrapped beginnings to include over 50% of the ENR Top Contractors as customers and deployments all over the globe. The company was successfully acquired by Autodesk in 2012 and has been rebranded as BIM 360 Field. Kanner graduated from Brown University and earned an MBA from MIT’s Sloan School of Management.
