Engineers Australia welcomes appointment of Victoria’s First Chief Engineer

Engineers Australia says the appointment of Dr Collette Burke as Victoria’s first Chief Engineer is a big win for the state.

The Association has worked closely with the Andrews Government to introduce the role of Chief Engineer and is proud to help make it happen.

Engineers Australia’s Victorian President Alesha Printz says the Chief Engineer will provide vital independent advice and technical oversight to the Government on the many major projects underway across the state.

"In her role as Chief Engineer Dr Collette Burke will be able to work directly with politicians to ensure that strategies, policies and rollout of Victoria’s infrastructure boom are all engineered with the best controls and management of technical risks.

"As Victoria’s first Chief Engineer Dr Burke will also help progress Engineers Australia’s push to establish a registration scheme for engineers to provide greater safety regulation for the industry," Ms Printz said.

Legislation for a registration scheme for engineers will be introduced to the Victorian Parliament soon, with Engineers Australia playing a key advisory role in that process.

The New Chief Engineer role sits within the Office of Projects Victoria – set up by the Labor Government to oversee the planning and delivery of Victoria’s pipeline of major infrastructure projects including the Metro Tunnel and level crossing removals.
