In a first for the Northern Territory, secondary students are getting practical experience and first-hand access to industry under a new program called the ‘sySTEMic Collaboration’.

At its core, the sySTEMic Collaboration is about people and represents a partnership between education, industry and community with a clear purpose: to provide industry supported pathways for young people to achieve qualifications that strengthen their employment prospects in the pipeline of STEM required industries.

Engineers Australia Northern General Manager Mark Monaghan says nationally only 6% of girls and 11% of boys in Year 12 study advanced maths.

“Engineers Australia is committed to building a workforce that reflects the diverse nature of our community by engaging young people in STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) in the Northern Territory,” said Monaghan.

“If the Territory is to produce innovative solutions to unique problems, it needs to encourage young people to choose Maths and Science. These are the subjects needed for much of our future workforce. 

“The Territory’s engineering companies are committed to helping build these opportunities – The sySTEMic Collaboration is a great example of this.”

Students continue to engage industry partner sites, take part in problem-solving of real workplace examples, hear from mentors and report back to their classroom, teachers and all involved on what they’ve learnt.
