Meet Trong Chau, graduate member and electrical engineer

Trong speaks to us about his passion for electrical engineering and shares his knowledge about some of the best software for graduate engineers.

What inspired you to study electrical engineering?

I didn’t really notice my interest toward technical fields at all due to the lack of exposure I had toward STEM subjects before arriving to Australia. However as soon as I arrived in Australia in 2013, I became involved with multiple STEM subjects all at once. After three years in high school, I decided that I would like to continue my interest in technology with an engineering degree at Charles Darwin University. From there, my interest grew into a passion for engineering.

I am also fascinated with electricity because it carries a little bit of mysteriousness. It’s the only field of engineering that you are working mostly with theoretical concepts and formulas. I was hoping that by trying my best to understand electrical engineering, I can contribute my knowledge and experience toward maintaining and improving our current electricity infrastructure through the implementation of new technologies and devices.

Can you explain the various pathways and what you found surprising about the diversity of the profession?

I started to realise how diverse the profession is as soon as I entered the workforce. Conversations and collaboration between different disciplines is common practice and each engineer in their field must learn to communicate with different fields of engineering, one way or another, in order to be proficient.

What are some of the highlights of your career to-date?

Since I am quite young and still learning, I would say every task, project and assignment I complete is an achievement. Making mistakes, correcting them, and not making the same mistakes twice are also big achievements for me.

I am also quite proud of my involvement with Engineers Australia. I really enjoy volunteering my time to assist the next generation of engineers entering the workforce. I was fortunate enough to work for a company that prioritises professional development and getting the graduates ready to do the tasks and projects in the field.

What do you like most about being involved in Engineers Australia?

Engineers Australia is a great avenue to volunteer and assist the community. My volunteered time with Engineers Australia has always been well spent in terms of contributing directly to the development of the next generation of young engineers. I also found myself learning a lot of vital soft skills when spending time with Engineers Australia, such as collaboration, communication and leadership.

Can you tell us a bit about what attendees can expect to hear from you as speaker at the commonly used software programs by graduate engineers event?

This event will be focused on introducing a list software that is commonly used in the industry. In this session, there will be four early career Northern Territory-based engineers in four disciplines: Electrical, Civil, Mechanical and Environmental. They will introduce to both the graduates and undergraduates the software they may work with or encounter during their careers.
