Engineers Australia would like to welcome Alan Eager, Stephen Pitchers and Chris Bridges to the Queensland Committee for 2023. Elected committee members headed by Joseph Tam, Queensland President, will work together across the year volunteering their expertise and time to provide leadership in key areas including the overall governance and strategic direction of Engineers Australia Queensland.
Each new member will serve the Queensland Committee for two years. You can find out more about the committee members below.
Chris is a geotechnical specialist with more than 30 years’ experience. Chris has been actively involved with Engineers Australia in recent years particularly through his involvement with the Queensland Committee of the Australian Geotechnical Society (AGS) since 2018, being Vice Chair (2019) and Chair (2020 and 2021).
Chris is committed to supporting our future pipeline of talent through active mentoring and attendance at university industry events. He has previously lectured and through contributing to and planning relevant CPD. He lectured at Queensland University of Technology, for about 11 years, on a variety of technical and professional courses. Chris is a contributor to various issues that face the civil and construction industries.
“I feel I can actively support the Queensland Committee going forward.” Chris says.
Alan joined Engineers Australia as a student and has been actively involved in committees and other industry volunteer work for 25 years. Alan built a successful career in oil and gas, first in Queensland then further afield, including more than a decade with Chevron in Western Australia and overseas. He returned to Brisbane last year to complete a Master of Sustainable Energy at the University of Queensland and to spend more time with his family.
Since returning to Brisbane Alan has been actively involved in events. He most recently joined a pilot workshop with students, graduates and industry exploring how to improve outcomes for engineering students undertaking the mandatory professional engineering experience and practice.
“Stepping back from full-time work to complete my masters degree has renewed my enthusiasm for engineering and inspired me to consider more prominent opportunities for advancing the profession. It has also given me a deeper understanding of the sustainability issues we face and I feel the time is now right to make a more significant contribution to the strategic direction of Engineers Australia,” says Alan.
Steve will have just completed two years as Chair of the Civil College Queensland Branch when he commences his term on the Queensland Committee. He has worked in a variety of civil engineering roles internationally for just over 30 years and truly believes in giving back to the profession and supporting members emerging and existing. He has a real passion for helping to develop and inspire others to be successful in their chosen career or professional development pathways, especially those who are at the start of their engineering journey.
Steve has already been actively involved in outreach engineering education by attending school career fairs and other engagement activities.
Steve says there has never been a better time to be an engineer, whether it is being part of the energy transition, taking action on climate change, applying the UN Sustainable Development Goals, or helping to drive much needed improvements in gender balance by supporting engineers in school STEM programs.”
