Australian and Indonesian engineers have a simpler path to employment across the two countries with the establishment of an engineering Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA).
On Friday 30 June, representatives from the Institution of Engineers Indonesia (PII) and Engineers Australia met at the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Canberra to sign the agreement.
The MRA will allow practicing engineers on the respective International Engineering Alliance APEC Agreement registers to benefit from a significantly streamlined assessment process in each country.
Engineers Australia CEO Romilly Madew AO says this landmark agreement will see Australia and Indonesia share the benefits of the immense knowledge and skill of our respective engineering professions.
“It has significant advantages for engineers in both nations, with a faster pathway to being recognised with Chartered status and registration to practice.”
Chartered Engineers Australia members will now be eligible for the title of Professional Engineer from the PII. Those PII members with relevant engineering qualifications and the titles of Professional Engineer or Executive Professional Engineer, will be eligible for Chartered status with Engineers Australia.
Engineers practicing in the following engineering disciplines are covered under the MRA:
- Aerospace
- Chemical
- Civil
- Electrical
- Environmental
- Geotechnical
- Mechanical
- Petroleum engineering and information
- Telecommunications and electronics
Not only will the MRA make recognition of engineering qualifications a simpler process in each country, but it will have significant impact on upholding international standards for engineering qualifications and practice.
“Engineers Australia has been working on this agreement with our Indonesian counterparts for many months and we are very pleased with the result. It represents a great step forward in collaboration between Engineers Australia and PII and it reinforces the spirit of cooperation between nations,” Ms Madew says.
The development of the MRA was encouraged by the Australian Government and the Government of Republic of Indonesia in 2019. Negotiations between the two nations began after the Institution of Engineers Indonesia was approved as a Signatory of the Washington Accord in 2022.
Ms Madew says strengthening our relationships with our international partners upholds professional standards and supports the profession to make change on a global level.
The MRA signifies a strong relationship and collaboration between Engineers Australia and the Institution of Engineers Indonesia. The two organisations will continue to work together to improve outcomes for engineers.
