Engineers Australia Europe tour to strengthen ties with engineering world leaders

CEO Romilly Madew and Board Chair Nick Fleming will travel to Denmark, Dublin and London to strengthen Engineers Australia’s international relations post-COVID. 

Ms Madew said they will spend the next fortnight meeting with industry leading companies and engineering experts at the forefront of international practice and innovation.  

“We’ll be attending meetings and site visits with industry leaders that will give us valuable insight into European engineering innovations and processes.”   

Starting in Copenhagen Ms Madew and Dr Fleming will meet with representatives from software engineering company Systematic and discuss the companies’ solutions for defence, police and health. They will visit and speak with leaders from the the renown DOLL Living Lab, a smart cities technology demonstration company.  

They’ll tour Amager Resource Center, a recycling business based in Denmark, before meeting the Australian Ambassador and executive directors at Aalborg University. 

On their final day in Denmark a site tour of the Technical University of Denmark’s Skylab workshop will provide them an example of a cross-disciplinary learning environment used by students, institutes and start-ups. 

Across six days in England Ms Madew and Dr Fleming will meet with several representatives from Laing O’Rourke. They’ll visit the Laing O’Rourke Centre of Excellence for Modern Construction, Centre for Construction Engineering and Technology and Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction. They will also tour one of the company’s projects ‘Two Fifty One’ which is one of Europe’s tallest precast buildings. 

Several meetings have been set up with officials from the Imperial College London, WSP, the Green Building Council, London Engineering and Design Institute, Institution of Civil Engineers, the UK Nuclear Institute and Engineering UK. Ms Madew and Dr Fleming will meet the Deputy Head Mission for Australia at the High Commission in London. They will also be hosting a London member meet and greet.

They’ll attend two roundtables featuring industry leaders from across Europe - one with Arcadis, the other hosted by the Australia-United Kingdom Chamber of commerce. 

Finally in Dublin, Ms Madew and Dr Fleming will host a breakfast for our overseas based members and will meet with the CEO of Engineers Ireland over lunch.  

The trip will be the first time Engineers Australia representatives have travelled to Europe post-COVID and will be an important opportunity to connect with overseas members and colleagues.
