University of Wollongong motorsport have revealed a Formula SAE car, named Billie, ahead of competing in the Formula SAE-A national event in December. 

The Formula SAE-A event hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers, sees university students design, build and compete in their very own Formula-style open-wheeled racing car. This challenge gives students the opportunity to put all their engineering and design skills to use to build a fast and efficient race car. 

University of Wollongong Motorsport business director Connor Harvey, a third-year electrical engineering student says “I know a lot of sleepless nights and blood, sweat and tears go into building these cars… It’s definitely a proud moment for everyone.” 

There are eight Formula SAE competitions held each year, one for Australasia, held at Calder Park Raceway in Victoria, as well as events in Japan, Europe, Brazil and the United States. The Australasian competition has been running since 2000 and attracts approximately 30 teams. 

“Formula SAE is an amazing opportunity for university students to obtain first-hand experience in project management, teamwork, critical decision making, budget management, application of complex real engineering techniques and hands-on manufacturing of a high-performance racing car,” Connor says. 

“Our reveal night brings together everyone who has joined us along the way in our journey to the 2023 competition and celebrates the work our team has put in over the last 12 months.”
