Perth’s Engineering Heritage Walking Tour Guide

Engineers Australia Centenary Year has been all about celebrating our past, present and future.

Engineering Heritage Western Australia have been busy designing an Engineering Heritage Walking Tour of Perth CBD and surrounding areas led by committee member Karen Riddette. While many other historical guides to Perth often focus on the architectural aspects and political histories of our great city, this project seeks to tell the stories of our engineers, focusing on engineering achievements and the engineers who made them happen, at times with significant personal sacrifice.

Each location is associated with a key engineer, technological milestone, or engineering achievement with the stories and historical images seeking to capture the engineering contribution to the development of Western Australia. During the project the committee have identified over 70 sites in and around Perth CBD with the locations being collated into three suggested routes. These routes have been designed as a walking tour so our members can reconnect with our great city as they go.

Discover the engineering significance of the Barracks Arch, Langley Park and the Horseshoe Bridge; revisit key moments in engineering history when Perth turned on electric lights, automated the telephone system and broadcast radio to remote farming communities. Meet engineers who contributed to the fields of medicine, government education and sport.

We look forward to our members and the general public being able to enjoy this informative tour shortly with the map to be launched later this year.
